Alasdair mac Mhaighstir /Alasdair the poet of the Gaelic Enlightenment
21st September - 15th December 2007

Born and brought up in Ardnamurchan, many people believe he is the finest of the Gaelic poets.
He compiled one of the first Gaelic/English vocabularies, and became the author of the most passionately patriotic Gaelic poetry ever written.
The exhibition will focus on the life and work of the poet and will feature some first editions of the poets work and Gaelic manuscripts on loan from the National Library of Scotland.

 

An Leabhar Mòr / The Great Book of Gaelic: 12th - 19th October 2007

The Great Book is a major contemporary artwork, a 21st century ‘Book of Kells’, that brings together the work of more than 200 visual artists, poets and calligraphers from Scotland and Ireland.
It has generated an international touring exhibition of 100 artworks, a book publication, a website, a TV documentary, a series of BBC radio programmes, a music CD, a schools pack and an events programme.
Through Iomall a’Mhòid Lochabair 2007, the Lochaber National Mod Fringe, we are privileged to able to bring this exhibition to the West Highland Museum.

Night at the Museum

West Highland Museum opened its doors after hours on Wednesday 31st October to host a traditional Halloween party. Guisers dressed to scare toured the museum by torchlight, hearing ghostly and gruesome tales, while keeping an ear out for the museum's resident ghost.

Afterwords, the brave souls were treated to traditional games and treats.

History Detectives

One programme from this BBC2 series was filmed at the museum in January this year.
It follows a letter written by Neill Vic Iain Vic Ruari and dated October 6th 1746. In the letter he confesses to having stolen Prince Charlie's Gold and gives instructions as to where it is hidden.
The programme sets out in search for the gold.

A Sense of Place: 6th - 10th August 2007

Bristol based artist Shani Ali was resident in the West Highland Museum from 6th - 10th August 2007.
During her residency Shani created work inspired by the Museum and items from the collection.
Shani hosted workshops for those who wanted to join her in exploring the Museum through drawing, doodling, sculpting and experimenting with a range of materials.
